The client requested specification of allowable nozzle loads for six nozzles on an FRP tank.
The client provided tank geometry and connection layup sizes for six nozzles on an FRP tank. Four nozzles were on the dished head and two nozzles were on the cylindrical shell wall. The smallest diameter nozzles had triangular gussets for additional stiffness.
Clark Engineers modeled and analyzed the tank and nozzles using the finite element method. Loads on each nozzle were analyzed independently for six applied loads (three forces and three moments). The allowable applied loads were determined based on the allowable stress of the FRP material.
Clark Engineers provided allowable nozzle loads for each nozzle in each direction. A method for determining allowable combined loads was also provided.
