Burner Stack

A burner stack manufacturer requested structural calculations to verify the design of a stepped tapered burner stack. The stack was composed of six unique segments of increasing diameter connected by support lugs and bolts and exposed to very high heat. The wind calculations were done using a Mathcad sheet that Clark Engineers developed based on ASCE-7 wind loads. To simplify the analysis, each stack segment was analyzed starting at the top and the resultant support loads were then applied to the top lugs of the next lower segment. It was determined that a reinforcing pad was required under each lug to control the stress to allowable limits at the elevated temperatures.
